All Saints Day

LITURGY OF THE WORD

1st READING REVELATION 7:2-4, 9-14

(A Huge Crowd of Saints)

The Elect give thanks to God and the Lamb who saved them. The whole court of Heaven joins the acclamation of the Saints.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 24

(Longing to See God)

“Lord, this is the people that longs for your face.”

2nd READING JOHN 3: 1-3

(We Shall See God)

God’s gift of love has been the gift of His only Son as Savior of the world. It is this gift that has made it possible for us to be called the children of God.

THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW 5:1-12a

(The Beatitudes)

Jesus is meant to be the new Moses proclaiming the new revelation on a new Mount Sanai. This is the proclamation of the reign, or the “Good News.” Blessings are pronounced on those who do not share the values of the world.

All Souls Day

LITURGY OF THE WORD

1st READING WISDOM 3:1-9

(In God’s Care)

This is one of the clearest texts of the Old Testament about God’s future vindication of the just. It is not as clear as later New Testament texts, but it does emphatically proclaim existence after death and our vision of God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 23

(Fearing No Evil)

“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

2nd READING 1st CORINTHIANS 15: 51-57

(o Death, Where is Your Victory?)

Saint Paul tells us that our risen body will be a body so changed by the power of God as to be Immortal. Christ died for sin which is the cause of our death; he rose from the dead to be the cause of our resurrection

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 6:37-40

(Eternal Life for Believers)

Jesus here indicates that God wills to save all people. Everyone who approaches the Son and believes in him will be raised up on the last day to the glory of eternal life.
