    SOME THOUGHTS ON TODAY’S GOSPEL

This is not an argument for the Prosperity Gospel which tells us that if we do the right things God will bless us with abundance of wealth and health—and that if we don’t get the promised abundance, it is our own fault.
The real message here is in the last few words: ‘they left everything and followed him’. They left behind them their great catch, because they had been captivated instead by the person of Jesus. We too are to ‘seek first the kingdom of God’ – we are to live in God’s world and judge the world’s affairs from that vantage point.

The 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

LITURGY OF THE WORD

1st READING ISAIAH 6:1-2a, 3-8

(Call of Isaiah)

The prophet, aware of his own unworthiness, is fearful. Purged of sin, he accepts the call of the Father.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM  138

(Gratitude to God)

In the sight of the angels, I will sing your praises, Lord.

2nd READING  1 CORINTHIANS     15:1-11

(Content of the Good News)

Through God’s favor, The Apostle turned from persecution to preaching the “good news” like Isaiah. Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 5:1-11

(Call of Peter)

Peter confesses: “I am a sinful man,” and is reassured by Christ. Then together with James and John, he leaves everything to become his follower.
