 SOME THOUGHTS ON TODAY’S GOSPEL

John the Baptist was an independent Jewish prophet. Groups of John's disciples continued to venerate him after his death. John quotes the prophet Isaiah, "Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight." The image John uses is that of a road engineer, shouting out orders for the construction of the 'royal road' of the Lord.

The Gospel positions John the Baptist in the history of his time, sign-posting the date of God's intervention in human history. It was not a one-off intervention; it continues through everyone who works to prepare the way of the Lord.

The 2nd Sunday of Advent

LITURGY OF THE WORD

1st READING BARUCH 5:1-9

(God’s Favor in Jerusalem)

Baruch tells Jerusalem of God’s Favor

God will gather the people together that Israel may grow secure in the glory of God. He leads in joy, mercy, and justice.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 126

(The Lord’s Wonders)

The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

2nd READING PHILIPPIANS 1:4-6, 8-11

(Cooperating with Joy)

Paul rejoices in his progress of faith among the Philippians. He is sure that God who began this good work will

help us grow. Paul prays that their love may even more abound that they may be rich in harvest.

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 3:1-6

(Prepare for the Lord)

Luke outlines some historical facts at the time of John the Baptist’s preaching. It is fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah. John prepares the way of the Lord.
