Welcome to

American Martyrs & St. Patrick

Pastor: Rev. Joseph L. Villa STL

23rd  Sunday of Ordinary time

September  08, 2019

To be a disciple we must carry our cross and follow him.

The cost of discipleship is real. To love Christ above family, self, possessions – this is difficult! And that is the cross we are to carry: the difficulty of prioritizing Christ when it would be easier not to. After all, what else is there? Only the cross. We carry our cross to become like the Master who carried his cross to death, victory and redemption.

Reading 1:       Wisdom 9:13-18b

In our first reading we learn that knowing God’s ways and plans comes only through the wisdom of the Holy Spirit.

R) Psalm 90:  In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.

Reading 2:   Philemon 9-10, 12-17   In today’s epistle, Paul urges Philemon to be merciful to his runaway slave, who served Paul in prison, and accept him back not as a slave but a brother.

Gospel:  Luke 14:25-33    In the Gospel Jesus tells the crowds what is required to be his disciple: placing discipleship above relationships, possessions and their own lives.

Questions of the Week

Question for Children:

Jesus tells us that we should treat everyone as a guest.

Who do you tend to shun or not be nice to?

Question for Youth:

God asks us to do for others without hope of repayment.

This past week, what did you do for someone else for which you won’t be repaid?

Who are the people most in need of your generosity?

Question for Adults:

Who are the people living near you that you would find it most difficult to invite to a meal in your home?

Or to invite to be part of your life?

Red Cross Blood Drive

Assorted Prayers

Prayer When Using Holy Water

By this holy water & by Your Precious Blood,

wash away all my sins, O Lord

For Grandparents

Dear St. Ann, You were truly twice blessed To have our blessed Mother

As your daughter And Jesus our Savior As your grandson.

I know that every period Of our lives Has its responsibilities As well as its joys.
Today, it seems That grandparents Have either too little Use or too much;

Either we are shunted aside To do nothing,

Or we are called upon To do everything.

Help me to know Just where my duties lie In my particular situation

And to carry them out as best I can.
Take care of my family, My children, and their children.

Inspire them all To follow your Grandson And lead truly Christian lives.

Keep all of us In your loving care, Never let us turn away from Jesus,

And help us in the end To receive the joy

Of entering into your Grandsons' Glorious presence forever.
Good St. Ann pray for us grandparents.

All praise to You, Lord Jesus, Lover of children:

 Bless our family,

And help us to lead our children to You.

Give us light and strength,

And courage when our task is difficult.
Let Your Spirit fill us with love and peace,

So that we may help our children to love You.

All glory and praise are Yours, Lord Jesus,
Forever and ever.

In Time of Anger

Lord Jesus, there is anger in my heart and I cannot root it out.
I know that I should calm down and offer the hurt and disappointment to

You but my emotion is running away with me.

Help me to overcome this weakness and give me peace of heart as well as mind.
Let me learn from this experience and grow into a better human being.

Prayer Of Praise

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen.

Family Blessing at a Gathering Father in Heaven,

We praise You for giving us Your Son

To be our Saviour and Lord.

Bless us all as we gather here today, (tonight)

And let us live happily in Your love.
 Hear our prayer, loving Father,

For we ask this in Jesus' Name.

For Those On Medication

Gracious God, You have given us many healing remedies

that are a benefit to us when we are sick.

Through the miraculous intercession of St. Anthony,

we ask Your blessing upon the medication prescribed for

(mention name) so that he/she may experience healing,

and be restored to full health in mind and body.

Prayer for our Parish

O God, you have made us the church of your dear Son.

Make our parish a family of one heart and mind in love towards you.

Grant that our common life and work may be an example to all about us.

Guide our Pastor and his assistants in their work.

Acknowledge the intercessions of our patron saints; and keep us secure in your love.

Fr. Joe
