American Martyrs and St. Patrick's Catholic Church

Welcome to
American Martyrs
Pastor:  Rev. Joseph L. Villa

Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time

October  01, 2017

FOCUS:

Jesus teaches us that God, who is Mercy, desires our obedience in word and deed.

Today’s readings speak of our freedom to choose obedience or disobedience to God, and of the very real effects of our choices. God’s love for us is such that while he desires our union with him, he allows us to respond to his love    we choose.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

Reading 1:    Ezekiel 18:25-28;

In the first reading, Ezekiel writes of the choice of each person to turn toward or away from virtue, and toward or away from wickedness. In this way, we choose life or death.

 R.) Psalm 25:
Remember your mercies, O Lord.

Reading 2:   Philippians 2:1-11;

Paul’s letter to the Philippians encourages us to be united in heart and mind, and to act selflessly.

Gospel:  Matthew 21:28-32;

In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the two sons ─ one who is initially disobedient but ultimately chooses obedience to the father, and the other son who claims obedience but does not fulfil the will of the father.

True love does not measure itself against the love of others.

If I am truly in love with God there is no need to compare myself with others or succumb to jealousy if others appear closer than I or because I have loved longer.  Authentic love does not consider benefits or privileges. It simply desires to be in the presence of the One who is loved. God invites all of his children into a relationship with him. It does not matter when along our life’s journey we accept that invitation.

It is only important that we DO.

     God promises love and eternal live to all who enter into relationship with him.

 It does not matter when.

This is God’s pure merciful gift.

It is God’s to give as God desires.
