                            SOME THOUGHTS ON TODAY’S GOSPEL

Washing one's hands before meals would seem like a good idea. However, what is at stake for the Pharisees is ritual purification, not merely hygiene. 'The traditions of the elders' were those injunctions and practices that the Pharisees added to the Law of Moses. Jesus is criticizing his opponents for substituting human traditions for divine commandments. As clean as the Pharisees hands were, they often used them to pick and point a finger and accuse. We bring our abilities and talents before God and ask for blessing that we may use them for our growth, but not at the expense of others. Jesus invites us to consider how we follow God in our hearts and cautions us against being distracted by human traditions.

The 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

LITURGY OF THE WORD

(Observing God’s Law)
Moses warns the people that they are not to add or subtract from the statutes and decrees of the Lord. God is looking after them directly.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 15
(Practicing Justice)
The one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.

2nd READING JAMES 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27
(Act On God’s Word)
Everything worthwhile comes from God. Christians should welcome God’s word, listen and act upon it.

THE GOSPEL OF MARK 7:1-8,14-15,21-23
(Sin Comes from The Heart)
Jesus condemned lip service. It is wicked thoughts from the heart that really make a person impure.
