SOME THOUGHTS ON TODAY'S GOSPEL            The longer form of today’s gospel brings together a number of loosely connected sayings of Jesus about trust and vigilance. Jesus addresses his disciples affectionately as a ‘little flock’. There is no need for fear: God, their ‘father’, has given them ‘the kingdom’ and they are to give in their turn. They are to sell their material possessions and give ‘alms’ or, in another interpretation, use their resources to engage in ‘works of mercy’ (eleÄ“mosunÄ“).

Their security resides in Jesus’ assurance: ‘Where your treasure (or treasury) is, there your heart will be also.’ The parental and affectionate language of the opening verses is in sharp contrast with the violent imagery towards the end of the gospel reading. Contrary to what some have argued in the past, the murderous slave master who cuts recalcitrant slaves into pieces is in no sense a gospel image of God. The Lukan Jesus is simply engaging his hearers’ experience of slavery, from whatever perspective, to make a point about the need for attentiveness to the demands of the gospel. The vigilant are ‘blessed’.

The 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

LITURGY OF THE WORD

1st READING WISDOM 18:6-9

(Salvation of the Just)

The first Passover is recalled, when the faithful people of God prayed behind closed doors, and the Angel of Death struck the firstborn of Egypt.

                                 RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 33

(Refuge in God)

“Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be His own.”

2nd READING HEBREWS 11:1-2, 8-19

(Faith)

Abraham, our father in faith, relies on the confident assurance of what he hopes for. May we take courage from his example.

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 12:32-48

(Awaiting the Lord

As the faithful people of God, we must act in accordance with our faith. We must be constant.
