Welcome to American Martyrs

Pastor: Rev. Joseph Villa

7th  Sunday of Ordinary Time

February 23 / 24, 2019

FOCUS

Jesus challenges us to act with love.

     Being a Christian – truly following Jesus – isn’t easy. Today’s Gospel is a reminder of that fact. Jesus describes what it means to act with love. He challenges us to do what seems humanly impossible: to love our enemies and forgive those who hurt us. These are not easy tasks! Only with the help of Jesus can we truly do what he commands.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

Reading 1:    1 Samuel 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23;

In the first reading, David does not allow anyone to harm Saul when they have the opportunity to do so, and makes it clear to Saul’s troops what he did.

R) Psalm 103:

The Lord is kind and merciful.

Reading 2:    1 Corinthians 15:45-49;

In Corinthians,  Paul describes Jesus as the second Adam, the spiritual man.

Gospel:  Luke 6:27-38;

Jesus, in the Gospel, explains  to his disciples all that the commandment “to love” entails.

A Stewardship Moment

       In today’s Gospel reading Jesus urges his listeners to “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” He also offers several examples of putting mercy into action. Listeners can then reason their way into how to put the values of the Gospel reflected in these imperatives into practice in other situations. Good stewards look for opportunities to exercise God’s mercy toward others. They realize that, in doing so, their own experience of God’s mercy not only becomes more profound, but affirms their hope of seeing the Lord face-to-face one day.

How have we experienced God’s mercy in our lives?

 How might our thinking, attitudes, words and actions reflect God’s mercy on someone else today?

Jesus tells us to treat others as we would want others to treat us.

How do you treat others as you want to be treated?

¿ Jesús dice que tratemos a los demás tal y como queramos que ellos nos traten a nosotros.

¿De qué manera tratan a los demás tal y como quieren que los traten?

Youth:

How do you follow Jesus’ teaching to “bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you?

Jóvenes:

¿ Cómo siguen la enseñanza de Jesús de “bendigan a quienes los maldicen, oren por quienes los maltratan”?

Adults:
Jesus says, “Give, and gifts will be given to you.”

When have you experienced your generosity coming back to you?
