                         SOME THOUGHTS ON TODAY’S GOSPEL

Lord, that is a strange question you asked Pilate: “Do you ask this on your own?” It pushes us back to our own piety: is it springing from the needs of our own hearts, or is it second-hand, asking questions and taking answers out of books and sermons? Let us belong to the truth and listen to your voice and answer you not with borrowed thoughts or emotions. The red carpet for Jesus is the tattered flooring in a poor house, and the crown is the headache he got from the sufferings of his people. In Jesus, the king, we are all brothers and sisters in the image of God. God is so big that we're all like him. What does that mean now? This is the big act of faith that we will soak ourselves in for the next few weeks; that God became one like us, one of us, born, lived, suffered and died like the rest of us. The real God is found in real people.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

LITURGY OF THE WORD

1st READING DANIEL 7:13-14

(Everlasting Kingship)

Daniel foresees the coming of the Son of Man. He receives all honor and glory. All peoples of every nation serve him. His kingship shall last forever.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM 93

(The Lord is King)

The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty.

2nd READING REVELATION 1:5-8

(The Alpha and the Omega)

By the shedding of his blood, Jesus made us a royal nation of priests to serve God. The Lord God is the Alpha and Omega-the beginning and the end. He is Almighty.

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 18:33b-37

(Christ’s Kingdom)

Before Pilate, Jesus admits that he is a king but that his kingdom is not of this world. Jesus says that he came into the world to testify the truth.
